Today, we’re gonna talk about the controversial car that came after the Cayenne: The Panamera. Specifically, the 970 generation, gen-1.
1. At some point, some Porsches have had part of their production done at a Volkswagen plants. Both the 924 and 944 were produced at VW’s Neckarsulm plant, the 914/4's 1.7L engine was produced fully at a Karmann plant. The 970.1 Panamera’s bodyshells were constructed and painted at VW’s Hannover plant. The hand-assembly we’ve come to expect from Porsche was done at their own Leipzig plant.
2. Unlike the Cayenne of it’s time, the Panamera featured a Porsche-designed and constructed 3.6L V6. A first for Porsche.
3. The Panamera, like the equivalent gen Cayenne was also offered with a manual transmission. You’ll be heard pressed to find one.
Next time, I’ll do a racecar!

The manual was not offered stateside though, correct?

I’ve seen manual Cayennes before, one was a very distinctively colored GTS. I’d like to believe the Panamera had the same opportunity. It came in both LHD and RHD models so there’s a chance.

I like these but doubt they’ll ever be cheap enough for me to buy in decent condition.

I know people harp on the panamera as being ugly, but its not bad in person, even the 1st gen.

I actually like these. Not the best looker from the back, but I find that’s really color and trim dependent.

Wait. It came in a manual?!?! How did I not know this?

I have always LOVED them but 12 bajillion buttons overwhelm me. I just don’t want to care that much.

Honestly, still one of my favorite Porsche designs ever. The original was a bit more polarizing than the current one.

According to my sources, it was legal and available in RWD only. And quite possibly rarer than a C4GTS Coupe 6 speed.

Rhetorical, but I only ever see the base model and base-4 here in the US, never the turbo or GTS...

i’m keeping the bagged theme from today going.
this is money.

...........How?

That car grows on me more and more every day. I want a Panamera BAD!

Exactly, I agree.

Boy they sure do look ugly after seeing the new generation for a few months now.

The newest one, while gorgeous, is more committee-designed than the previous which I think of as an exercise in being different.

My life is changed!

I’m surprised to see how well they’ve held their value too, I just saw a 2010 with 83k on it for 30k.

Right?? And to my knowledge, they’re holding up better than 928s!

I’m pretty disappointed, that they hung on so much, given that I like them, and they didn’t seem to be particularly well liked.

P orsche enthusiasts who w ant power and performance are not look in g at Panameras, so no one buys the GTS and turbo models. The performance enthusiast is heading straight to the 911 and 718 showroom.

While I would go for the 718 immediately, Panamera makes a tempting practical daily. And with a lower center of gravity, more fun than a Macan or Cayenne.

Definitely more fun (and better looking!)
